- Gichin Funakoshi was the real-life karateka and the founder of Shotokan Karate-Do, perhaps the most widely known style of karate, and is attributed as being the "father of modern karate".
- In Hanma Baki series, Funakoshi's name was written with an another kanji characters. An original kanji characters for his name is "船越", but the manga author decided to write it in another way – "富名越".
