Shuumei Kanou (加納 秀明, Kanō Shūmei) is a fictional character from anime and manga series of Baki the Grappler. He is a chief of security at the Tokugawa residence and fighter in the Underground Arena. Kanou has no particular style, but imitates his opponent's stance to anticipate their movements.
Personality[]
Shuumei Kanou is eloquent and brilliant. This can be seen in his speeches and conversations. He is also a greatly calm and controlled person, but he can also be provocative and malicious, as can be seen during his encounter with Kanji Igari.
Kanou is very confident of his skills. It can be said that to some extent he is even conceited. As a result, he was very surprised when Baki Hanma easly managed to deal with his style of fighting.
Appearance[]
He has black eyes and slicked black hair, which is quite short. His posture and height are average. He does not wear any beards. As a bodyguard, he is dressed in a black suit (just like any other bodyguard of Mitsunari Tokugawa).

Shuumei Kanou has his own philosophy of hand-to-hand combat. He claims that the protection is the very essence of self-defence, and if you posses a perfect defense, basic single attacks are all you really need. In addition, he also stated that when you imitate an opponent's stance, you get a good idea of what attack to expect and not expect.
However, even if he replicates the style of his opponents, he can do nothing against someone who resists his attacks. He also sometimes stops at a single attack when he should be following through. He's a defensive fighter who rarely attacks, and thus his offense is not very strong. Generally relies too much on his defensive style to fight well. Kanou is easily defeated by Baki Hanma after landing only a single punch.
